I was very excited when I learned that RCA was finally releasing this box set on cd. It turned out to be a 4 cd set, rather than the previous 8 volumes of lps. Disc 1 has the early live performance of Elvis in Las Vegas on May 6,
1956 to start with. This was Elvis' first failure in his short career. The Vegas audience just wasn't ready for him then. I suppose he had to be thinking of that when he first signed to appear there in 1969. We all know what happened then.

But this show was in the beginning, long before Elvis had won over the adult crowd that Las Vegas drew and was. His type of music just wasn't approved of there in 1956. Nevertheless, these are very good recordings and show the live Elvis act of that time very well. He does a set of 4 songs, "Heartbreak Hotel", which he introduces as Heartburn Motel, "Long Tall Sally", "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Money Honey" to a very subdued crowd who doesn't seem to appreciate it at all. Next on disc 1 is an Elvis Monologue, a rare interview from 1962. It displays keen insights into Elvis' personality. Then we have the Pearl Harbour 1961 Benefit show in Honolulu, Hawaii
on March 25, just before he started filming the film "Blue Hawaii", one of his most successful films. It was to be his last live performance until he performed in Vegas in 1969.

The sound quality of this set is much improved over the lps. He sings 20 songs including several that were newer then and not used in his later Vegas act.

Disc 2 begins with alternate takes of movie songs and sounds very good. Songs like "Datin'" and "A Dog's Life" show a humorous side of Elvis that we seldom got to see. All totaled, there are 10 outtakes here.
Next on disc 2 is songs from his 3 TV specials in 1968, 1973 and 1977. There are 9 songs here, from "Jailhouse Rock" to "My Way".

Disc 3 begins with Las Vegas songs that had not been released before. Perhaps the very best versions of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" and "Polk Salad Annie" are to be found among the 10 selections, some from
Vegas rehearsals.

Next on disc 2 are 9 singles that had not been on lp yet when this set came out on lp in 1980. They are called the lost singles.

Finally on disc 3 are 4 songs with Elvis at the piano. Each is tenderly performed like never before, although other versions with instrumental backing were released.

Disc 4 is a typical 1975 concert taken from 5 different concerts then to add up to 1 concert as it was then. There are 23 songs including one medley and it is a very good concert with the highlight being a live version of T-R-O-U-B-L-E. It is very nice to have the concert all on one disc finally and with better sound than before. You really have to pay attention to hear the edits. With this set and the Gold box set, we are another step closer to
having all of Elvis' lps on cd, good news for us cd collectors.

There is also a 35 page booklet with lots of pictures that is very nice, making this whole package a very good deal.
