The breakup of the Soviet Union, while a boon to Russian and foreign scholars in that it led to enormous stores of archival material being declassified, also left the once orderly archival system of Russia in complete disarray. The poor financing of archival collections has resulted in vast stores of invaluable material being accessible only to the most persistent and well-financed researcher.

In addition to voluminous collections related to Russian history and culture, Russia's archives also contain numerous collections of documents, manuscripts and art collected by Russians abroad connected with foreign writers and artists, as well as Russian emigre archives.
